Employees at Prysmian/General Cable in Williamsport have legitimate issues that can be resolved or at least improved through collective bargaining. Workers don’t hire unions or bring them in, they form unions with their coworkers. They do this to take advantage of the National Labor Relations Act, the federal law that gives them the right to form a union and compels their employer to bargain with them in good faith for a written contract.
Aside from an employer voluntary recognizing its employees’ union, the NLRB election process is the only means workers have to compel their employer to negotiate with them in good faith for a written contract. Data collected by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics clearly shows that union workers fare much better their “at-will” counterparts. (insert link to the BLS News Release 1/18/19)
The IBEW is not a business. It is an organization of workers who have joined together with co-workers to accomplish what they can’t as individuals. Since 1891, the goal of the IBEW has been to organize all workers in the electrical industry. We bring new members into our union because it bolsters our strength and influence in the industry and help assure that members have an effective voice in the workplace. There are no union dues during the organizing process and all costs will be covered by IBEW Local 812. Employees won’t pay union dues until a contract is negotiated, and that contract is voted on and accepted .
by a majority of the workers in this bargaining unit. When that happens, union dues for General Cable employees at the Williamsport facility will be just 1% of gross wages. The IBEW waives initiation fees for workers who join the union through an organizing campaign, so there are no initiation fee either.
